Additional Information

  • Trip PreparationandFAQs
  • Rates do not include meals or lodging outside of the High Sierra Camp locations
  • Saddle trip prices include lodging, meals, mule and packer guide
  • Guided hikes prices include lodging, meals, and hiking guide
  • Minimum age for saddle trips is 10 years old, minimum age for all other High Sierra trips (guided or unguided) is 7 years old
  • Guests going on saddle trips are limited to bringing 225 pounds of gear with them — which includes their body weight and all items carried. You will have two saddlebags for items needed during the ride such as water, lunch, small camera, rain poncho, etc... We recommend packing these item in gallon size seal-able plastic bags (one for each saddlebag). Two smaller water bottles are better than one large one. We ask that you do not wear a backpack or water bladder pack for safety reason. On a separate pack mule, you can have more gear — up to 15 pounds. We recommend packing this gear in a small duffel bag / day pack or large seal-able plastic bags (suitcases are not suitable for pack mules). You many want to bring a plastic trash bag to wrap around your gear in case of rain. As a requirement, guests must wear long pants while riding. Shoes or Boots must have a heel that rests comfortably within stirrups. Additionally, all guests are required to wear a helmet, which we will provide. If you wish to bring your own helmet, it must be an equestrian helmet ASTM/SEI approved.

Environmental Stewardship
More than 13,000 visitors stay at the High Sierra Camps every year—and several thousand backpackers stop by for meals. We work hard to limit our impact on the fragile subalpine ecosystem by recycling and composting waste, and using solar-powered composting toilets.
Showers, Restrooms, & Laundry Facilities
A true luxury for any back country experience—showers are available at Merced Lake, May Lake and Sunrise Camps (subject to water availability). After you return from your day of adventuring, clean up with a nice shower and enjoy a delectable, hearty meal, your evenings will be filled with ranger-led campfire conversations about the surrounding wilderness.
All camps have restrooms. Merced Lake, Sunrise, and May Lake have basins for washing clothing.
